Chris Brown Performs 'Yeah 3x/protect Ya ...

Chris Brown's performance focused as much on dancing as singing, as the R&B singer bounded around various stages suspended by wires while paying homage to some hip-hop and rock classics.

Dressed in a crisp, white suit, Brown opened the performance in silhouette on a rotating stage before showing off impressive dance moves. After a bevy of female dancers accompanied the singer, Brown paid homage to two legendary groups. First, Brown started with a high-energy "Yeah 3X" before he took it back to the mid-90s with a Wu-Tang Clan tribute, utilizing snippets from the group's classic tracks "Protect Ya Neck" and "Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing to F--- Wit" to dance with hoodie-clad dancers. As backup dancers jumped around on trampolines, Brown then paid tribute to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" before breaking into his own track "Beautiful People."

As the song began, Brown, attached by two wires, flew around from stage to stage, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon style. The last person to do that at the VMAs was Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno, and we all know how that turned out. But Brown kept it classy, bounding around stages and showing off the famous choreography that helped make him a ubiquitous star.
